Girondins de Bordeaux coach Jocelyn Gourvennec has told The Ligue 1 Show on beIN SPORTS he used the example of AS Monaco’s title-winning stars to inspire Malcom’s performances this season.
Malcom struck seven times in 37 matches for Bordeaux last season, his first full campaign in France following his January 2016 move from Corinthians.
The talented 20-year-old has already matched that tally in just 17 appearances so far this season, and Gourvennec highlighted a chat between the pair last summer that shaved the rough edges off the Brazilian’s game.
“He signed for Bordeaux in January 2016. So last season, when I arrived, it was his full season. He showed his promise but was also quite wasteful, so this summer I spoke to him and I talked about the example of Thomas Lemar and Bernardo Silva, who are similar players to him,” explained the Bordeaux boss, referring to two of the most influential players in Monaco claiming the 2016-17 Ligue 1 Conforama crown.
“They had great seasons and I explained that if he could cut out the mistakes, keep on taking risks but play with more efficiency, he could have the same kind of impact, and that’s what he’s showing.”
