UEFA Champions League: Dutch league loses automatic group place

From next season, Eredivisie champions will not get an automatic place in the Champions League group stage.

Dutch champions Feyenoord finished bottom of their Champions League group and Vitesse Arnhem were bottom of their Europa League group this season.

This follows Holland’s national team’s failure to reach Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Also, new UEFA rankings put the Dutch league in 12th place in Europe.

A Dutch club has not won a European trophy since 2002, when Feyenoord beat Borussia Dortmund in the Uefa Cup final.

Ajax were Europa League runners-up last year, losing the final to Manchester United, but failed to reach the Champions League group stages this year.
