CAF have announced Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will debut in African football starting the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.
The increase of referees’ mistakes all over the world, some of them diverting the course of titles, made it inevitable for some national football federations to start applying technology to avoid controversy. FIFA had kick started the usage of the VAR system in 2017 Confederations Cup.
CAF said that the decision to use VAR was approved by the federation’s Referees’ Committee on Monday in Egypt.
African referees shortlisted for FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 and with previous training in VAR will be called upon for CHAN, the African federation explained.
“Today we are going to make some very important decisions that will be pivotal for the future of refereeing in Africa. We will launch major projects to meet the challenges ahead,” head of Referees’ Committee Suleiman Waberi said.
“The world expects a lot from the new CAF and particularly from this reconstituted Referees Committee to make significant changes to meet the expectations of our clubs and Member Associations to silence the critics of refereeing in Africa and be at par with other Confederations.”
