Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi are all level on 53 goals apiece as Europe’s top scorers in 2017; will one of them pull away from the pack in the final days?

On Sunday, Lionel Messi spurned the chance to move back out in front as the top European marksman of 2017 after missing a penalty in Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat of Deportivo on Sunday.

The Argentina forward failed to beat goalkeeper Rubén Martínez from the spot and also hit the woodwork on three occasions as he remained on 53 goals for club and country in the calendar year. He continues to share top spot with Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo, who drew level with Real Madrid’s winner in the FIFA Club World Cup final on Saturday.

Messi and Ronaldo will come face to face in their last chance to find the net this year when Liga leaders Barcelona visit Madrid in Saturday’s Clásico. Bayern’s Lewandowski and Paris striker Edinson Cavani both contest their final games of 2017 in midweek, while Tottenham’s Harry Kane has two fixtures remaining to catch his rivals.
