Gary Lineker took to social media to praise Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud as Chelsea FC thrashed Arsenal to win the Europa League.
Arsenal headed into the game knowing that winning would be their final chance to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
The Gunners dominated the opening stages but Chelsea FC grew into the game towards the end of the first half.
After a goalless first half, Chelsea FC took the lead in the 49th minute with a diving low header.
Pedro Rodriguez then made it 2-0 when he fired home Eden Hazard’s low cross, before the Belgian netted from the penalty spot five minutes later.
Substitute Alex Iwobi fired home a brilliant goal for the Gunners to pull one back, but Hazard netted his second of the night with a cool finish in the 72nd minute.
Former England star Lineker was watching the game unfold and posted regular updates on Twitter.
After Giroud’s opener, Lineker posted on Twitter: “Giroud strikes with a superb header against his former club and almost doesn’t celebrate.”
Then, after Hazard netted his penalty, he wrote: “I’d Hazard a guess that Chelsea might just edge this now.”
And after the final whistle, Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations to @ChelseaFC on winning the Europa League. Superb 2nd half performance and a brilliant display from @hazardeden10 ….possibly his last for the club. Boy, they’ll miss him if he goes.”
Wednesday night’s game in Baku may well have been Hazard’s final appearance in a Chelsea FC shirt as the Belgian playmaker continues to be linked with a transfer to Real Madrid.
For Arsenal, the result means another season of playing in Europe’s second tier club competition after their fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.
