Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid have finally revealed the reason behind the halftime substitution of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois during the Champions League clash with Belgian side Club Brugge on Tuesday evening.
Thibaut Courtois was subbed off for French shot stopper Alphonse Areola at the start of the second half of the aforementioned Champions League game.
Earlier reports had claimed that Real Madrid player was substituted during the Club Brugge because of anxiety but the Spanish giants have released a statement to deny that reason.
It was revealed that the former Chelsea goalkeeper suffered acute gastroenteritis and that was responsible for his early substitution during the Champions League game at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu earlier in the week.
Thibaut Courtois conceded two first half goals to Nigerian striker Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis before his substitution as Real Madrid trailed 2-0 at home to Club Brugge FC of Belgium at that point.
Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos pulled one back for his team in the first ten minutes of the second half before midfielder Casemiro scored the equalizer with five minutes left on the clock shortly after the visitors’ captain Ruud Vormer was sent off for two yellow cards.
The point earned was the first one for Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.
