Garth Crooks has admitted his surprise at seeing Arsenal move up to third in the Premier League table at the weekend.

David Luiz scored the only goal of the game as the Gunners claimed a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth in the top flight at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon to move up into third spot in the table.

Indeed, Arsenal are now just a single point behind defending champions Manchester City in second place in the Premier League table as they look to seal a spot in the top four this season.

Brazilian defender Luiz scored his first goal for Arsenal and kept his first clean sheet in a Gunners shirt at the weekend.

BBC Sport pundit picked Luiz in his team of the week, but admitted that he cannot understand how Arsenal are in third place in the table.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Crooks said: “Just when Spurs fans think the week cannot get any worse, Arsenal win at home to Bournemouth and the victory takes them up to third in the table.

“Luiz, who never does things the easy way, scored his first goal for the Gunners and the only goal of the game but more importantly kept his first clean sheet in an Arsenal shirt.

“I cannot believe this Arsenal team are third in the table.

“I know we are only eight games into the Premier League season but their defence has been so bad, how is this possible?”

The north London side are aiming to finish in the top four this season after they ended up fifth and without a trophy last term.

Arsenal will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Sheffield United away from home on Monday 21 October.

The Gunners will then host Vitoria at The Emirates on Thursday 24 October in their next Europa League home clash.
