Former Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was in sensational form as he helped Juventus secure a quarterfinal spot in the Champions League at the expense of Spanish La Liga club Atletico Madrid.
Ronaldo and Juventus had trailed 2-0 from the first leg in Spain but they were able to turn the last 16 tie around on home soil via a 3-0 victory made possible by the treble from the Portuguese international skipper.
The home side started the second leg on the front foot and could have scored inside the first five minutes but Giorgio Chiellini’s goal was ruled out after Ronaldo was harshly adjudged to have fouled Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the buildup.
Juventus were not to be denied in the 27th minute when Ronaldo met Federico Bernardeschi’s cross with a first-time header at the back post to give the hosts a priceless opening goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo added a second goal four minutes after the halftime interval before he completed his treble from the spot in the final stages of the game after Atletico Madrid substitute Angel Correa brought down the impressive Bernardeschi in the box.
Juventus held on to that 3-0 scoreline to advance into the last eight of the competition via 3-2 aggregate win.
Ronaldo has now scored a joint-record eighth hattrick alongside Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi.
He has scored a record of 124 goals in the Champions League.
