Why Mohamed Salah, not Lukaku or De Bruyne, is Chelsea’s worst transfer decision

In different circumstances, Chelsea might be taking on Liverpool with two of the Premier League’s top scorers in their side; instead, Mohamed Salah will be wearing red when the Blues visit Anfield on Saturday evening. Since swapping Rome for Merseyside, the Egyptian has been virtually unplayable, out-scoring even £58m man Alvaro Morata to lead the division’s scoring charts with nine goals. Yet not even 18 months ago he was still officially a Chelsea player, and of all the very high-profile players the west Londoners have sold prematurely – particularly under Jose Mourinho’s second spell at the club – Salah is starting to feel like the biggest error, particularly in terms of how he would have fitted in to Antonio Conte’s current team.
